JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Tuesday lead the National Youth Day Commemoration at the FNB Premium Parking precinct.
This year's National Youth Day marking the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising, is held under the theme “reset @50 – our national commitment to the future for freedom lives in every generation.
Ramaphosa will begin commemorations by laying a wreath at the Hector Pieterson Memorial site, before unveiling the Commemorative Coin Project at the site.
Preparations in Orlando West have brought increased security, high-profile delegations and significant traffic disruptions.
Authorities say road closures have been put in place to manage the expected influx of visitors around the Hector Pieterson Memorial site, with diversions affecting motorists in the area.
Xolani Fihla, JMPD spokesperson said: "We are expecting a lot of traffic disruptions and we can see it is a hive of activity with the event starting at 10, we are expecting more people to arrive in the precinct. We advise residents and people that usually come to commemorate the uprising to be a little patient, after the wreath ceremony is done, the road closures will be lifted and people will have the opportunity to do their ceremonies at the memorial site."
