Ramaphosa lifts Fannie Masemola's suspension after charges withdrawn

JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has lifted the precautionary suspension of National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, who will resume his duties on Monday, 19 October.

Masemola was suspended in April after being charged under the Public Finance Management Act in connection with alleged failures to adequately oversee a controversial SAPS health-services contract awarded to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s Medicare24.

The charges were formally withdrawn last month after a National Prosecuting Authority review found there were no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution.

In a statement on Friday, the Presidency said Ramaphosa “welcomes the National Police Commissioner on his return to his full duties”.

The President also thanked Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane, who served as acting national police commissioner during Masemola’s suspension, for her service.
