PRETORIA - President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Leonard Lekgetho as the new permanent head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), effective 1 September.
Lekgetho has been acting in the position since February, when former SIU head Andy Mothibi left to take up the position of National Director of Public Prosecutions.
He brings 19 years of experience at the SIU, having served in various portfolios, most recently as Chief Operations Officer.
According to the Presidency, the appointment is intended to provide stability to the unit and strengthen its ongoing efforts to fight crime and corruption.
“President Ramaphosa wishes Lekgetho and the leadership and staff of the SIU well as he assumes leadership of an agency that is a critical component of the criminal justice architecture against crime and corruption,” the Presidency said in a statement.
