Ramaphosa powers up electricity reform

JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has endorsed the first phase of efforts to reshape South Africa's electricity sector.

It sets out recommendations for establishing an independent Transmission System Operator separate from Eskom.

This is a step towards restructuring the country's electricity sector to create competition, attract investment, reduce electricity costs.

The report also identifies growing municipal debt to Eskom as a major risk and recommends urgent measures to address it.
