Red Level 10 warning issued for Limpopo, Mpumalanga

JOHANNESBURG - A Red Level 10 warning for disruptive rain has been issued for parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The Weather Service says it's the first time since 2022 that it has issued the highest warning.

It expects the heavy rainfall to persists in the coming days and has warned residents that it poses a severe risk to livelihoods and infrastructure.

Several people have died in both provinces, including a 2-year-old victim.

Disaster teams are racing against time to rescue stranded and desperate residents.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa described the floods in Limpopo and Mpumalanga as catastrophic.

“The saddest part is the 36 houses that have been wiped away. There is not a single house that I see here. There were houses and even the foundations are gone. This is a real catastrophe," Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa committed that government will help those affected by the floods in Limpopo rebuild their lives.

“Our people will be taken care of. The details of every household and person affected are now being gathered. Government is going to help them to rebuild their lives.”
