JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg is reopening its Central Fire Station in Marshalltown.
The facility was shut down in 2018 due to safety concerns.
Officials say the revamped fire station will boost emergency response.
Robert Mulaudzi of Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services says the new fire station is needed after the old building was declared a heritage site.
“This fire station has been built to provide much-needed support to residents of the CBD and surrounding areas," Mulaudzi says.
The upgraded facility is part of a long-term project which began in 2021 according to a statement by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA).
At the time, JDA said the station aimed at ensuring residents receive prompt and efficient emergency services while addressing the high risks of fires and other hazards in the busy central business district.
