SA considering Israel's response to ICJ case

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa is reviewing Israel’s response in its case at the International Court of Justice over genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Israel filed its response on Thursday after the court granted several extensions.

Government is deciding whether to submit further written arguments or proceed directly to the oral hearings.

President Cyril Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to defending international law, upholding the Genocide Convention, and supporting the ICJ in holding states accountable for violations.

Palestinians continue facing Israeli strikes, death, destruction and restricted access to humanitarian aid.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the situation remains dire.

Escalating tensions in the Gulf and Israel, and the US's continued attacks on Lebanon, threaten to expand the conflict.
