SA pledges $5m to Africa CDC Ebola response

PRETORIA - South Africa has announced a $5-million contribution to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to support the continent’s Ebola response.

The pledge comes as seven new Ebola infections are confirmed in Uganda.

Suspected cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo have now surpassed 900.

The outbreak, centred in eastern Congo’s Ituri province, has already claimed lives in both countries and prompted the World Health Organisation to declare a global public health emergency.

Health officials are also facing growing challenges on the ground, including attacks on treatment centres, community resistance and fears over the handling of Ebola victims.

Government says the contribution reflects a commitment to African solidarity and African-led solutions to continental crises.
