SAPS officials flagged in Madlanga probe face precautionary suspension

PRETORIA - Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia says SAPS officials flagged by the Madlanga Commission will be placed on precautionary suspension.

He was speaking to the public broadcaster.

A new special task team will further investigate implicated police and Ekurhuleni metro officials.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the President is concerned about damning allegations coming out of the Commission.

On Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa directed Cachalia and National Commissioner Fannie Masemola to establish a special unit to investigate individuals implicated in the Madlanga Commission.

In an interim report submitted to Ramaphosa on 17 December, the Commission has recommended that there was prima facie evidence of wrongdoing and made referrals for investigations be instituted against Major General Lesetja Senona, Major General Richard Shibiri, Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu, Brigadier Rachel Matjeng and Sergeant Fannie Nkosi.

Magwenya said Ramaphosa was concerned about the eroding levels of confidence that the public has towards law enforcement agencies.

“And by taking this action, the president wants to show those levels of confidence towards law enforcement agencies.

"Secondly, the president is concerned and disturbed by the evidence that's coming out of the commission. It's something that will be concerning to every South African to learn that individuals who are entrusted with leadership roles in critical areas of law enforcement are found to be behaving in the manner that we are seeing on our screens as the commission hearings proceed," Magwenya said.
