SARS freezes assets in corruption crackdown

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has ramped up its crackdown on corruption.

It has secured a preservation order against two former officials accused of fraud and misconduct.

The High Court in Pretoria granted the order, placing several properties, vehicles, and financial accounts under curatorship.

SARS said there is strong evidence of serious offences, including money laundering, abuse of state resources, and violations of tax laws.

A court-appointed curator will safeguard the assets as investigations and tax assessments proceed.

Officials said this signals a tougher stance, warning that corruption within SARS will be aggressively pursued, even after the employees leave.
