SA’s corruption emergency | SIU not ruling out legal action to recoup debt

JOHANNESBURG - The Special Investigating Unit is not ruling out legal actions against those who owe it money.

It’s owed about R1-billion state entities, government departments and municipalities.

The SIU says it’s crucial to recoup the millions owed to ensure it fulfills its duties.

Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says they are still using diplomatic means to recover the money.

"In some instances in some of the municipalities they would say they didn't ask to be investigated therefore we can't pay you for the investigation," he said.

"They have a variety of reasons that they give."
