SASSA changes November grant payment dates ahead of elections

JOHANNESBURG - Disability grants will now be paid on Monday, 2 November, after the original payment date clashed with the local government elections.

The grants were initially scheduled to be paid on 4 November.

South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) spokesperson Dr Paseka Letsatsi says the agency approached the National Treasury after identifying the potential clash.

Election day has been declared a public holiday, prompting a change to the payment schedule.

Older persons’ grants were initially scheduled for 3 November, disability grants for 4 November and children’s grants for 5 November.

Under the revised schedule, older persons’ grants will be paid on 30 October, disability grants on 2 November and children’s grants on 3 November.

In a statement, SASSA said the adjustment is intended to support the smooth administration of social grant payments around the elections.

The agency has urged beneficiaries not to visit its offices unnecessarily, saying payments will be processed according to the revised schedule.

Letsatsi said beneficiaries would be able to use their cards at retailers and banks once the payments had been made.
