CAPE TOWN - Parliament's Section 89 Impeachment Committee has recommended Advocate Thandazani Madonsela SC as its evidence leader.
Nine MPs voted in favour of Madonsela, while seven backed Advocate Kate Hofmeyr SC. Eleven MPs abstained.
The committee's recommendation will now be forwarded to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, after which Parliament will make the formal appointment.
MPs are meeting to obtain legal opinion on whether President Cyril Ramaphosa could be compelled to testify.
The recommendation comes as the Section 89 Committee appeals a Western Cape High Court ruling that temporarily halted impeachment proceedings linked to the Phala Phala scandal.
The EFF, ATM and MK Party have joined the application.
Last week, Ramaphosa secured a High Court order pausing the impeachment process while he challenges the findings of the Section 89 Independent Panel report.
