Section 89 impeachment heads to court, Ramaphosa seeks urgent interdict

CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape High Court will on Wednesday hear President Cyril Ramaphosa’s urgent bid to stop Parliament’s Section 89 impeachment process.

The president wants the process suspended while the Section 89 Independent Panel report is reviewed.

The panel found he has a case to answer over the Phala Phala saga.

Parliament set up the committee after the Constitutional Court ordered impeachment proceedings.

Committee Chairperson Makashule Gana will attend the Western Cape High Court hearing as the second respondent.

"The committee and myself, as the second respondent, we have opposed this application because we believe the work of the committee needs to continue. Once judgment is made, we will take if from there but we are confident that the court will agree with our argument that the work of the committee proceeds because it’s important," said Gana.
