Severe storms sweep SA

JOHANNESBURG - The Weather Service has downgraded severe weather alerts for the Eastern Cape and Western Cape

It's moved from an Orange Level 9 back to Level 8. Heavy downpours are expected to trigger flooding and pose a risk to infrastructure, property and public safety.

Residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and heed all official warnings. Heavy downpours are already damaging homes and other infrastructure in parts of the Eastern Cape.

In the Western Cape, authorities are preparing for severe weather in large parts of the province this week.

Nabeel Rylands, acting head of the Western Cape Disaster Management Centre said jocks within the province have been activated to ensure rapid response.

"We've also ensured that all our municipalities are on alert and all our national as well as our municipal and provincial stakeholders are part of our clusters. We've also disseminated all the necessary early warnings to all sectors including the most vulnerable," Rylands said.
