Sex offenders registry made public after years of advocacy

JOHANNESBURG - The National Register for Sex Offenders will be accessible to the public by month-end.

This is a major victory for advocacy groups who've been pushing for this change.

And it comes as a recent study revealed a shocking statistic that over 16,000 teachers have criminal records, ranging from sexual offences to murder.

Juanita du Preez, spokesperson for Action Society, said the announcement caught them by surprise.

"The whole public will now be able to see the names of anyone who has been convicted of a sex crime," she said.

"In the past, you had to apply to see if somebody was on the list but now the public can access it."
