'She raised me' : Mkhwanazi defends 'mother's' funeral amid scrutiny

PRETORIA - Suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi could be facing contempt charges for misleading the Madlanga Commission.

Mkhwanazi had a rocky start to his return to the commission on Tuesday.

Commissioners grilled him on his excuse for missing a previous appearance.

Mkhwanazi told the commission he had to attend his mother's funeral.

But they questioned the age of the woman, who was just 10 years older than him.

It later turned out that it was his stepmother who died.

"I'm still saying that she raised me, she's, my mother. Yes, I was not born out of or from her, but she raised me since I was young. She took over from my grandmother who raised me," he said.

Mkhwanazi was scheduled to reappear last month, but his appearance was postponed due to the death.
