DURBAN - eThekwini Council Speaker Thabani Nyawose has appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could help police investigate the killing of the municipality's ward 17 councillor, Sibusiso "Khekhe" Khwela.
Khwela was shot dead in Klaarwater on Thursday.
Police said an unidentified suspect approached the councillor under the pretence of seeking assistance.
As Khwela came out to help, the man allegedly drew a firearm and fired several shots, killing him. The councillor was declared dead at the scene.
Nyawose said the attack was carried out in broad daylight and witnessed by several people.
"He did this in broad daylight, in front of many people without covering his face. He was brave enough to do this terrible act.
"We hope there are members of the public who might have seen this man or witnessed the incident. We appeal to them to work with the police and share any information they may have. We are in pain as the eThekwini Municipality," said Nyawose.
Reports indicate that Khwela was in his office with several community members when the suspect arrived, claiming to need assistance before luring the councillor outside.
