'Sitting back and not voting is a dereliction of our responsibilities' - Ramaphosa

JOHANNESBURG - ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to turn out in numbers and vote in Wednesday's polls.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines during a visit to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Monday, Ramaphosa said citizens have a responsibility to shape the future of their municipalities.

His comments come as Day One of special votes for the 2026 Local Government Elections got underway across the country.

“Sitting back and not voting is actually a dereliction of our responsibilities as citizens and as residents. We can only shape the direction, the future, the capability and the functionalities of our municipalities when we go out and make that cross on the ballot box,” Ramaphosa said.

He also took the moment to call on ANC candidates to commit to serving communities while warning that those who fail to deliver could be removed.

“We've been doing so over time as the ANC; we are saying we want our candidates to commit themselves to working for the people, and those who don't, we will take steps to even remove them.”
