SIU welcomes ruling against R85m border wall tender

JOHANNESBURG - The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has welcomed the Special Tribunal’s ruling against a controversial R85-million tender awarded for the construction of a border barrier.

The contract was awarded to ISF Shula Joint Venture for the construction of a concrete wall.

According to the SIU, the project was commissioned by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport in response to community concerns about cross-border crime, particularly the smuggling and trafficking of stolen and hijacked vehicles into Mozambique.

However, instead of delivering on these urgent safety measures, the joint venture allegedly submitted fraudulent documents, failed to meet mandatory requirements, and left the project incomplete.

The SIU says a fraudulent B-BBEE certificate was used to secure the tender.
