JOHANNESBURG - The South African Weather Service is warning of disruptive snow and severe weather across several provinces as a cold front hits.
Snow is already reported in high-lying parts of the Western Cape.
The Weather Service warns the snowfall is likely to spread to parts of the Eastern Cape where it could close roads and temporarily cut off some communities.
Damaging winds and waves are also expected along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, while thunderstorms could affect parts of Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.
A cold front and cut-off low are bringing very cold conditions.
Residents and motorists are urged to take precautions as the weather system moves inland.
Heavy snowfall has trapped multiple vehicles and forced the closure of three Eastern Cape mountain passes: Barkly, Penhoek, and Boesmanshoek.
Weather forecaster Tokelo Chiloane said amaging winds and waves are also expected along the KZN coast with the snow already falling in the province, while thunderstorms could affect parts of Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.
