MAKHANDA - The Eastern Cape Social Development department says it's appalled by a viral video showing young children openly consuming alcohol in the presence of adults.
The department's MEC Bukiwe Fanta says social workers have been dispatched to the Engcobo village to investigate the matter that is believed to have happened on Christmas Day.
Fanta says the video, which has sparked anger, was captured from a village in Engcobo.
Children's rights activist Petros Majola says urgent action is needed to prevent another Enyobeni tragedy.
He's calling for law enforcement to move fast and arrest the parents responsible.
Fanta says while they've tackled pens-down parties, the department is determined to crack down on underage drinking.
