Solidarity claims NHI victory

JOHANNESBURG - Solidarity has welcomed the Constitutional Court ruling on the Certificate of Need.

The union calls the judgment a major victory for healthcare practitioners and the public.

The court struck down sections of the National Health Act linked to the Certificate of Need.

Government wanted to use the system to decide where healthcare professionals could work.

It also wanted powers to control which medical services practitioners could provide.

Solidarity and seven other applicants challenged the law in court.

The union argued that government planned to centralise control of healthcare through regulation and bureaucracy.

Solidarity says the judgment strengthens its opposition to the NHI.
