CULLINAN - Spring Day celebrations turned deadly in Tshwane on Tuesday afternoon.
This after a 53-year-old man was arrested for the murder of 21-year-old Tshepang Nyathi following an altercation during Spring Day celebrations in Refilwe, Cullinan.
According to police, a group of young people was celebrating Spring Day by pouring water over passing pedestrians when an altercation broke out after they attempted to pour water over the man.
He then allegedly stabbed one of the young men during the confrontation before fleeing the scene.
Community members reportedly apprehended the alleged perpetrator a short distance away from the scene of the incident and assaulted him before police arrived.
Nyathi was declared dead at a local medical facility.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Cullinan Magistrate's Court on Thursday, where he will face a charge of murder.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the suspect was taken to a medical facility before he was placed under arrest.
"The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation," said Nevhuhulwi.
"The police urge members of the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to allow the police to deal with criminal incidents through lawful processes."
