Stellenbosch infant deaths probed

STELLENBOSCH - The Western Cape Health Department says it's investigating the deaths of Wendy Pietersen and her unborn baby.

In a separate case, officials are probing why 10-month-old Mileeck Newman died.

All the deaths occurred at the Stellenbosch Provincial Hospital recently.

Pietersen's family refuses to accept that her death could not have been prevented.

The 33-year-old mother of two arrived at Stellenbosch Provincial Hospital on 21 December.

She had swollen feet and was due to give birth to a daughter, whom she had already named Milan.

Pietersen's husband feels that legal action is the only way for the family to get answers.

Nineteen-year-old Tammy Newman is grieving her 10-month-old son.

She asked not to be interviewed on TV, saying she is too emotional.

Baby Mileeck was rushed to hospital last month for excessive vomiting.

She says she was ignored, and her baby eventually died.

Newman has not received any counselling and is seeking assistance in suing the hospital.

The provincial health department says it's investigating the cases.
