MDANTSANE - The principal of Ulwazi Senior Secondary from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape, accused of misusing school funds of over R1 million, is back in his office.
This comes after Mihlali Makhalima's suspension was lifted.
He had been placed on precautionary suspension following allegations that he spending millions intended for school necessities on luxury items, including alcohol, fuel and luxury meals.

Those necessities included school nutrition, learning materials, and maintenance.
According to Eastern Cape education spokesperson Mali Mtima, while his suspension has been lifted and the case continues.
Mtima said Makhalima has return to the school, however, comes with conditions.
“Following a review of the matter, the department has decided that the principal will return to work and continue performing curriculum-related duties. However, all financial responsibilities and delegations will be withdrawn pending the conclusion of the investigation,” he said.
A statement by the Democratic Alliance from 2025 indicated how financial records revealed how “more than R250 000 was spent at upmarket restaurants, including Grazia Fine Food & Wine and La Grato. A further R450 000 was withdrawn from ATMs, and R226 000 in cash back from tills at grocery stores.”
