JOHANNESBURG - In a bold move, convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester is pushing the limits of South African law.
He's challenging the Correctional Services Department's decision to transfer him to a maximum-security prison in KwaZulu-Natal.
In an outrageous demand, Bester is asking the North Gauteng High Court to be kept at a medium security facility like Leeuwkop.
At the heart of the matter is a fundamental question: do convicts forfeit their rights upon incarceration, or are they still entitled to the same protections as every other citizen?
And can they dictate to authorities where they would like to serve their sentences?
