JOHANNESBURG - A suspected hantavirus outbreak has killed three people on cruise ship.
The vessel was sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from Argentina to Cape Verde.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) said a UK national is in intensive care in a Johannesburg hospital.
One case of hantavirus infection has been confirmed after a laboratory test.
The WHO said investigations are ongoing, including further testing.
Hantavirus is usually passed to human from rodents through urine or faeces.
While rare, the virus may spread between people and can lead to severe respiratory illness.
The WHO is facilitating coordination with vessel operators for medical evacuation of passengers showing symptoms.
