JOHANNESBURG - National Treasury has announced it will begin releasing the remaining withheld municipal funding from the end of July.
The decision follows ongoing monitoring of 69 affected municipalities after their funds were temporarily withheld, due to concerns over compliance with municipal finance laws.
Last week, Treasury confirmed that it had lifted the freeze for 42 of the 69 municipalities. At the time, it said 10 municipalities had already received their full allocations, amounting to R1.7 billion.

Treasury said the release of the funds does not mean municipalities have fully addressed their financial issues.
Municipalities are still required to comply with the requirements of the Municipal Finance Management Act.
