Tshwane suspends plant manager at Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works

PRETORIA - The Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works plant manager has been suspended after residents in the area were supplied with potentially contaminated water.

More than 400 cases of gastrointestinal illness have been reported in the area since early this month.

Most of those affected are under the age of four.

In a statement on Friday, the City of Tshwane confirmed the suspension and ordered a further independent investigation.

“This investigation must examine the relevant procurement, operational, management and communication process, including whether appropriate control and escalation procedures were followed,” the city said in the statement.

Residents were supplied contaminated water after the plant was unchlorinated from 24 September to 14 October due to chlorine shortages.

Mayor Nasiphi Moya said residents deserve answers.
