Scheduled outages have been running this weekend to replenish depleted reserves.
They ran out after six units broke down at various power stations.
"We started to see in early January that things were slipping, things that were meant to come back to service were not coming back to service and that escalated," said Eskom board chairperson Mteto Nyati.
"This weekend we are focusing on are replenishing our reserves."
