UPDATE: At least 11 killed in crash on R102 in Durban

DURBAN - ALS Paramedics says at least 11 people have been killed in a crash just south of Durban.

A truck and a minibus taxi collided on the R102 in the Lotus Park area on Thursday.

Emergency services are still on the scene.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Gareth Jamieson said so far, ten people have been confirmed dead. Two others, including the driver, are still trapped in the minibus taxi with critical injuries.

“As you can see by the wreckage, the impact is severe; people have sustained serious injuries. The eThekwini Fire Department has had to extricate the deceased to get to those who are still alive.

"The two who were in front are still severely entrapped. The taxi is pinned against the truck cabin; there’s no movement for the firefighters to work with," Jamieson said.

It is not clear how the accident happened, but unconfirmed reports from the scene indicate that the truck driver lost control and crashed into oncoming traffic. He had to be escorted away from the scene by police after he was threatened by angry residents.

A man who lives in the area said the stretch of the road was notorious for accidents.

“It’s a dangerous road. We witness a lot of serious accidents here. Just recently, we lost a small school child. There is a lot of speeding that takes place on this road.”
