EKURHULENI - It's unclear if Witness D was killed for his involvement at the Madlanga Commission or in Zama Zama operations.
Forensic Investigator Chad Thomas says Marius van der Merwe told journalists including eNCA's Yusuf Abramjee that his life was in danger.

Thomas warned that the Madlanga Commission could have done more to protect Marius, because a lot of people knew him and as soon as they heard his testimony, they knew it was him.
"Marius was not just a witness at the Madlanga Commission, he was also very active in anti-zama zama activities in the East Rand"
This has been an on-going conversation about whistle-blower protection in South Africa.
Thomas speculates that the fact that Marius would have still had to testify in court at a later stage since his testimony now was not one of the courts. Thomas believes that this is potentially motive for Marius' murder, even though the motive is still unclear.
