UPDATE: Peet Viljoen to appear in court on Thursday following arrest

JOHANNESBURG - Disgraced lawyer Peet Viljoen is expected to appear in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday following his arrest on arrival at the OR Tambo International Airport.

The 57-year-old was arrested by the Hawks on Tuesday, after flying in from Newark, New Jersey. Viljoen was deported from the US following around 100 days in detention.

He has been arrested on allegations of fraud, theft, forgery, and contravention of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.

It is alleged that during May 2010, several properties owned by the Johannesburg Property Company were unlawfully sold to unsuspecting purchasers. The company did not receive payment for the transactions.

The disgraced lawyer and his wife, Mel, were arrested in the US for allegedly shoplifting groceries from a supermarket. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement granted Mel voluntary departure and booked her a flight back to South Africa. She landed at OR Tambo on 24 May.

Viljoen has also previously posted derogatory statements about black people and South Africa on social media.
