UPDATE: SCA sets aside order to repatriate Edgar Lungu's remains

BLOEMFONTEIN - The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein has set aside a high court order to repatriate the remains of late Zambian president Edgar Lungu.

Lungu's final resting place has been the subject of a legal battle between the government and his family.

EXPLAINER |  10 months later, fight for Edgar Lungu's remains continues

The Lungu family approached the Supreme Court to appeal a high court ruling that allowed the Zambian government to repatriate his body.

The legal standoff has kept the former leader's body in South African mortuaries since his death in June 2025. His family argues it was the late president’s wish to be buried in South Africa.

But the Zambian Government wanted to afford him a state funeral.
