Van der Merwe's alleged murderer a highly trained former police officer

JOHANNESBURG - The alleged involvement of a former SAPS Special Task Force member in the murder of Marius van der Merwe has raised concern among police.

Matipandile Sotheni appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Sotheni faces several charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said it's worrying how private companies and wealthy individuals are recruiting highly trained officers.

Mathe warned that once these officers are recruited, it's hard for them to say no when they're given orders.

"If a person orders you to do something and they are paying you, I think it becomes quite difficult to say no because you've already resigned from the SAPS," she warned.

A specialised task team arrested the 41-year-old in Johannesburg over the weekend.
The case was postponed to 25 March for a bail application.
