DURBAN - The City of eThekwini Mayor, Cyril Xaba, has described the incident in which a water tanker drove over and killed a resident in uMbumbulu as a tragic accident.
Xaba said they cannot speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident, and as such, have handed the matter over to law enforcement for further probe.
"The police will assist with the matter and from there we will await the findings in this regard.”
The 39-year-old man was knocked over by the tanker, causing fatal injuries.
Witnesses claim the tanker continued moving and did not stop immediately after the incident.
The incident has turned the spotlight to water woes in the city.
According to Xaba, the area has long been riddled by water outages; as such, the community is serviced by water tankers and boreholes to ensure that households receive water.
In addressing the issue, he said the city is working on a R1.2 billion Southern Aqueduct project, which is a 24-kilometre pipeline aimed at improving water to areas including Shallcross, Chatsworth, uMlazi, Folweni and Queensburgh.
“We hope to have completed the laying of the snow pipe by the end of this year,” he said.
