WC and EC schools suspended for two days

JOHANNESBURG - Schools in three districts in the Eastern Cape have been suspended on Wednesday and Thursday.

The closure comes after a Level 8 weather warning was issued for the province.

The districts that will be affected are Nelson Mandela, Sara Baartman and Buffalo City.

The provincial Department of Education has urged these districts to implement safety and contingency measures in response to the expected weather conditions.

Mid-year exams will also be rescheduled for the schools that will be affected. According to the department, catch-up classes will be prepared where it will be needed.

In a statement, Acting Head of Department, Qaphela Luthuli, said that principals must also establish alternative means of communication to facilitate school work during this period.

This is to ensure that lost teaching time is recovered.

"There is no schooling in these districts to ensure the safety of all our learners.  Should there be any developments relating to this issue, districts will be informed in due course,” said Luthuli.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape announced on Tuesday that schools in the Eden and Central Karoo Education District will also be suspended on Wednesday and Thursday.

The areas are also affected by severe weather conditions, warranting the department to take precautions.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 8 weather warning for both the Eastern and Western Cape.

A cold front is expected over Gauteng over the weekend.
