'We will maintain public order': SAPS on high alert ahead of planned marches

PRETORIA - The country's law enforcement agencies are leaving nothing to chance ahead of Tuesday's anti-migrant protests.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structures (NatJoints) has declared its operational plans fully activated.

The structure confirmed on Monday that all operational plans are fully operational across all nine provinces to manage the situation.

The massive security deployment, which is estimated to cost more than R600 million, will targets potential flashpoints to prevent a repeat of the July 2021 unrest.

Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria, NatJoints chairperson and deputy national commissioner Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili said every law enforcement officer understands the mandate.

Mosikili said:

"Every commander understands the responsibility. Every operational plan is in motion. Let there be no doubt: Government is ready."

"We will secure every lawful and peaceful demonstration. We will protect every community. We will safeguard critical infrastructure and any building. We will maintain public order," Mosikili added.

The security strategy integrates Public Order Policing units, tactical teams, intelligence structures, the SAPS Air Wing, and the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster.

Private security networks, including Fidelity, are also tracking data, while Defence Minister Angie Motshekga confirmed that the South African National Defence Force remains prepared to deploy if required.
