Western Cape amplifies call for more police powers

CAPE TOWN -Western Cape leaders are pushing for a major shift in policing.

They say giving local and provincial authorities control over crime intelligence will lead to more effective law enforcement, especially in communities plagued by gang violence.

Officials are calling for the devolution of certain policing powers to the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police and other provincial law enforcement agencies.

They say they’re already building capacity to take on this new role.
