Western Cape wants fire, water and crime declared disasters

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde wants disaster declarations on several fronts.

He wants a state of disaster for wildfires, water shortages and crime.

Winde is sending applications to Cooperative Governance Minister, Velenkosini Hlabisa.

The over 600 fires since the end of 2025 have had a devastating impact.

Winde says his cabinet has taken note of calls for violent crime in the Western Cape to be declared a disaster.

The premier say he will be meeting acting Police Minister, Firoz Cachalia, on 5 February about lasting solutions.
