EKURHULENI - Marius van der Merwe, also known as Witness D in the Madlanga commission proceedings, was shot dead outside his home in Brakpan.
Van der Merwe testified in November that EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi told him to dispose of a body.
Speaking at the Madlanga Commission, Van der Merwe said that he interpreted Mkhwanazi's instruction as a warning that if he didn't comply he'd be next.
"And as I said, especially after the meeting took place between themselves, it was quite clear that they decided between themselves that I'm the one that's supposed to dispose of the body. I really didn't have a chance to agree. [...] So I interpret it as if I don't comply, then I would probably be next."
President Cyril Ramaphosa says government will work harder to protect whistleblowers.
He is condemning the murder of Witness D, Marius van der Merwe, at the Madlanga Commission. Ramaphosa described the incident as heinous and is calling on the country to remain resolute to end corruption.
Ramaphosa offered his condolences to the Van der Merwe family, his friends and colleagues.
