Wits University's IT system hit by cyberattack

JOHANNESBURG - Wits University has confirmed that some IT systems have been compromised in a widespread cyberattack affecting multiple countries.

This attack is classified as a “zero-day” event, meaning it exploits a vulnerability unknown to the software provider and without an available patch at the time of the breach.

Despite the attack, the university says its operations continue as normal.

The university is working with software company Oracle and cybersecurity experts to determine what data, if any, has been compromised.

The university has also notified the Information Regulator.
