Zambia says it has taken possession of Edgar Lungu's remains

JOHANNESBURG - The saga over the body of former Zambian president Edgar Lungu continues.

The Zambian government said it has taken possession of the remains.

It follows a failed appeal by the family against a 2025 court ruling allowing the state to repatriate the body.

President Hakainde Hichilema said Lungu must be given a full state funeral in Lusaka.

There's been a long-standing dispute between Lungu and his successor, Hichilema.

But the family insists improper legal processes were followed.

They are now seeking to have the remains returned to the funeral home.

Lungu died last year in Pretoria after an undisclosed illness, leading to a dramatic legal dispute.
