JOHANNESBURG - A 45-year-old Zimbabwean national has been remanded in custody after allegedly attempting to smuggle manufactured tobacco worth about R3.8-million through the Groblersbrug Port of Entry.
Shumba Munetsi was arrested by SAPS Border Policing members on Monday after officers became suspicious of a concealed hatch underneath a trailer.
Police say they found 521 plastic bags containing about 7,294kg of suspected manufactured tobacco hidden in the compartment.
The Volvo truck and LP gas trailer were also seized, with a combined estimated value of R1.8-million.
Munetsi appeared in the Phalala magistrate’s court on Wednesday and remains in custody.
The matter was postponed to 31 August for a formal bail application.
