JOHANNESBURG - About 1.7 million vehicles on South African roads may be affected by the global Takata airbag recall.
The Automobile Association says many vehicles have changed hands over the years, making it difficult for manufacturers to reach current owners.
The AA has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to help identify affected vehicles and direct owners to manufacturers for free safety checks.
The campaign covers many vehicle brands and focuses on cars built between 2000 and 2022.
"We saw this as an opportunity to assist the OEMs, the manufacturers locally, in identifying these vehicles and steering the owners towards the respective manufacturers," said AA CEO Bobby Ramagwede.
"Almost every brand manufactured between the years 2000 and 2022 could be affected by these airbags."
