IEC turns to TikTok to help keep voters informed

JOHANNESBURG - The IEC is turning to social media to encourage voter participation ahead of the Local Government Elections.

But the spread of misinformation on these platforms poses a challenge to efforts to keep voters informed.

TikTok Southern Africa is partnering with the Electoral Commission to help combat disinformation and protect the integrity of the elections.

"The in-app election centre actually plays a critical role in ensuring that we are able to expeditiously review and identify content that could potentially mislead our users on our platform and undermine the integrity of the elections," said TikTok Southern Africa's Tholoana Ncheke-Mahlaela.

"What we also do is we label content. So whether it is AI-generated content, we label that content so that our viewers or rather our users, know what it is that they're interacting with.

"And we also indicate by label whether or not a piece of video has been, or rather is, unverifiable."
