JOHANNESBURG - This year's El Nino weather pattern has the potential of being the strongest ever.
Whether it does pan out that way or not, climate scientist Cobus Olivier warns those affected to prepare for the worst.
“It's important to remember that there's very extreme variations of what could happen in extreme heat. The potential is there, but it's not definite that it would happen, but again, the potential being there makes it a very serious case for people to prepare for those cases to happen.
“It's also very important to understand that we are not necessarily expecting there to be absolutely no rainfall during the whole of summer. It's still the summer season, we still expect potentially extreme thunderstorms and potentially even flooding to occur, (but just be remembered that we are looking at less of these rainfall events to occur, rather than no rainfall at all."
