1787 firearms removed from circulation

JOHANNESBURG - More than 1,000 firearms seized in Lesotho have been destroyed in a joint operation between SAPS, and the Kingdom's police.

The operation forms part of African Amnesty Month and the AU’s Silencing the Guns initiative.

Police said the cross-border cooperation will help tackle crimes including trafficking, stock theft and vehicle theft.

The latest destruction follows the disposal of nearly 12 thousand firearms by the SAPS two months ago.

Authorities say removing illegal weapons from circulation is key to preventing them from ending up back in the hands of criminals.
