CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town said the 30 June protest was largely contained.
The City said the two marches that took place in the CBD and Kraaifontein concluded, for the most part, without incident.
Today was the unofficial 30 June deadline for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa.
"We have experienced what appeared to be opportunistic looting attempts in some areas, most notably Delft, Wesbank and Hanover Park," said City of Cape Town MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith.
"Services were on scene quickly and managed to shut down these acts. At last count, a dozen suspects had been arrested by SAPS and City agencies on charges including public violence, theft and malicious damage to property.
"The enforcement staff will remain on high alert overnight to monitor for and respond to any additional attempts at criminality directed at foreign nationals or businesses.
"We remind the public to please continue being vigilant by reporting any incidents quickly, so that services can respond and arrest those responsible."
